Cancer that develops in the outer lining of the lungs, or the peritoneum, accounts for the majority of lung cancer cases in people who don’t smoke. It accounts for nearly half of all non-small cell lung cancer cases, according to the American Cancer Society. The lining of the lungs is actually too thin, but there are certain compounds that can make it much thicker. These compounds include non-aldehyde compounds and certain carcinogens, such as tar and nicotine. Tar and nicotine contribute significantly to lung cancer in non-smokers.
