Measles is a childhood infection caused by a virus. At one time it was quite common, but today it can be prevented .

Measles can be serious and even deadly for young children. Although death rates have dropped around the world as measles vaccine is given to more children, the disease still kills more than 100,000 people each year, most under the age of 5.

As a result of high prevention rates in general, measles has not been widespread in the United States in more than a decade. About 30 measles cases were reported in the United States in 2004, but more than 600 in 2014. Most of these cases originated outside the country and occurred in people who were not vaccinated or did not know whether or not they had been vaccinated. .
